I Believe

Writer's picture: Anna HashemAnna Hashem

I believe our identities as individual people emerge from our experiences as we grow and how we learn from them. I have been lucky enough to gain many experiences through travel and I have realized how important the contrast between culture, music and education is to me.

These elements make me who I am today and define who I want to be in the future.

I studied most of my school life in a British International school on the shores of the Red Sea, which set the foundations of who I am. I believe my diverse nationality (French/Egyptian) and an International environment, is what led me to the adventures I am currently living.

At the age of twelve, I started a sport that changed my life forever: Kitesurfing. With the opportunity to be on the water so much, my level grew rapidly. At fourteen, I was competing at international championships and signing contracts with brands. My hobby soon became my life and I was determined to find a balance between this passion and my education.

Music played its way into my life when my parents bought me my first guitar. I wrote, sang and played my songs at the age of seven. Within the music I made, I found a form of self-expression. I saw my future between my guitar chords, wind and paper. During my early high school years, I participated in many writing competitions as well as part time jobs. I wrote for local magazines, sang in pubs and proceeded with my kitesurfing career.

My education is the core to my creativity. I studied comparative literature on Filipino white sandy beaches and calculus on Greek rooftops. I am convinced learning about different cultures is the root of creativity and diverse perspectives. I am an open-minded, understanding and motivated person by virtue of not only visiting other cultures, but immersing myself in them and learning to understand them.

Through my education, travels, sports, music and writing I have developed my own identity as a curious and creative individual with a passion for documenting and sharing my experiences.
